While we’ve been keeping rather busy working on the new EP, J Ohm and I decided it would be a good idea to release a couple tracks we recorded last year that never made it out. We decided to break this one out from the vault and mix it down and throw it to the wolves. This track holds alot of personal meaning to me and took me a year to finish writing. Hope you guys like it. If you listen at the end, you can hear an impromptu set of bars from a take that Ohm just kept recording.

Streetwise portrays the lives of nine desperate teenagers. Thrown too young into a seedy grown up world, these runaways and castaways survive, but just barely. Rat, the dumpster diver, Tiny, the teenage prostitute, Shellie, the baby-faced blonde, DeWayne, the hustler, all old beyond their years. All underage survivors …fighting for life and love on the streets of downtown Seattle, Washington.

I don’t even know where to begin with this documentary. Its crazy to see some of the same blocks i’ve walked 25 years in the past.

Here is all 10 parts of this movie, in order. Big ups to Funkanthropic for puttin this up. I have a copy of this if anyone wants to peep it.

First and foremost, I completely agree with Above Ground’s list. You should most definitely get hip to the MC’s listed there. They are all doing work in the town and most definitely merit mention when it comes to Seattle hip hop.

But, as always, I am pulling for the underdog. That said, here are some of my current favorite northwest MC’s. Chances are highly likely you’ve been sleeping on them.

The Natural Truth

The homey J Ohm tuned me into this guy not too long ago. I am really feelin the new remixes posted on his Myspace, especially Stop Snitchin (Luda’s Runaway Love) and Kanye’s Heard Em Say. He also has a music video for his track Story to Tell.

Headlinez

This guy is gettin repeat play out my speakers and I literally just got hip to him this week. Lyrically solid, I am a huge fan of his cadence and wordplay. If you put him and Thig Nat on a track they would sound virtually identical to me, and with Thig being one of my top MC’s outta seattle, thats mad respect to this dude. And Headlinez isn’t just an emcee, he also has some pretty savage paint too. Make sure to check out his ode to the art of graf, Bomber’s Anthem on his Myspace.

Mic Phenom

Oh boy. What can be said about Mic Phenom that hasn’t been said about Afghanistan? Jokes aside, homey has to be one of the illest MC’s I know. A frequent competitor of the battle circuit, Mic is known for his ability to lay bars on the fly. And not some half assed filler bars either. Whether hes stacking a 16 or going for the juglar in one of his GrindTime Battles, Mic unloads some savage vocabulary. Peep 40 Yd Dash Pt 2 for further evidence.

Cash Clepto

I don’t think this guy gets enough credit for as much talent as he has. I first came across this dude on the Proof, and I really enjoy his work. I think my favorite cut I’ve heard so far is Hennessy, featuring a very talented local emcee in George Zelaya. You can peep the entire mixtape here.

Xperience

Olympia’s XP is not just a talented MC, but a great singer too. Part of the Oldominion family, peep his warm up at Hells Kitchen. When hes not working on his own material, XP is also involved in projects with Seattle’s Macklemore as Step Cousins, and also does work with his fellow OD’ers Smoke and Iamme as SIX.

There is plenty more talent past this list. Unfortunately, its time for me to get some actual work done. I’ll try to tackle a bigger list later D:
